I took last week off from blogging to enjoy the week with my Mom who was visiting from the US.   So we celebrated both Canada Day and Independence Day at our house.

When people ask me about wearing vintage I often advise them to incorporate one piece into an outfit with modern piece so that the piece doesn't "feel" old or look costumey. This can be particularly important with any trend that might have happened in your lifetime the first time it came around.

Well in this outfit I am ignoring my own advice.  My dress is a vintage 40s navy blue and white polka dot dress.   The dress has been in my closet for about 10 years.  I bought it in Portland when I was there for a lindy hop exchange. I thought it would be perfect for swing dancing.  Alas the material doesn't breath well.  So I only worn a handful of times until I had it shortened.  It now feels less dowdy and dated and ready for regular streetwear.   And of course, polka dots are very on "trend" this year.  Here I have paired it with several other vintage-esque elements, and then covered it (because this was taken while it was still cool weather) with a my new thrift jean jacket.

In Vancouver a jean jacket is a staple in my wardrobe year round. Even in the summer it can get chilly in the evenings.  And this one is a perfect example of what can be available from thrift - it was $10 and still had its tags on.  It fits perfect.  It is a slightly lighter colour and longer than my other jean jacket. That "other" jean jacket has served me well for over 12 years, but it was feeling a bit snug in the shoulders and I don't always want to wear a cropped style jean jacket.  This new thrift jacket practically threw itself at me in the store.

The accessories are some of my favourites.  They all have a 40s vibe and make me smile.  The bracelet is little black and white photos of Fred and Ginger dancing. It has a matching necklace. The wool red flower was a gift from my sister-in-law and the tote has cute beaded 40s art.

So what do you think? Did I do okay mixing my 40s themed accessories with my vintage dress?
