40ish at the Emmys – 2012
The trends on the Emmy Red Carpet were as varied as those on the fall runway. There was a lot of colour - reds and yellows were especially big. There were patterns. There was lace. There was metallic. There were cut-aways. There was white. And as always there was sparkle.
Was a bit surprised not to see more of that dark red, called oxblood, that was all over the fall runways. But also happy to be surprised by how many of the women over 40 took risks. Not all of my them worked. But better to try something new than just fade away...

This are the women that picked a dress, accessories and a hair style that made her sparkle more than usual. They were the right choices to reflect her public personality and shape. She looked like herself just "more". Which, seems to be me, befitting of a Red Carpet event.
Sofia Vergara celebrated her 40th birthday just a few weeks ago, and she certainly celebrated in style. This Zuhair Murad gown fit her shape and personality to a T.
Julie Bowen rarely plays it safe. And most of the time it works for her. Tonight was no exception. She wore a neon 80s lime/lemon gown by Monique Lhiullier. The dress had a rather classic shape, but the colour made it WOW.
Another woman to wear a classic gown shape which was amped up with a fantastic colour. This orange was the perfect colour for Padma Lakshmi.
An Emmy favourite list is never complete without Nancy O'Dell. She combined the hot red and orange in one gown and looked fantastic.
Another risk taker whose risk paid off is Leslie Mann. The untraditional dress by Naeem Khan is lovely. The skirt pops and the lace detail on top works for Leslie's frame. But I think I love it all more because she paired it with turquoise accessories.
Jessica Lange is a good news story in orange J. Mendel. She made some rather boring choices last year, and happy to see her look so great this year.
Tina Fey kept her accessories to a minimum with this embellished Vivienne Westwood gown. It might have been boring, but the purple colour is just lovely on her.
Michalle Fairley from Game of Thrones kept her dress colour simple. It is the wonderful neckline, which shows off her long neck, which makes this dress shine.
Gretchen Mol looks lovely in this bright red Vintage Valentino dress. But I'm not sure I love the matching accessories. And I can't decide if I love or hate her bow shoes.
The Jury is Still Out
There are a few outfits which I can't decide if I love or hate. What do you think? Tell me whether you love or hate these in the comments.
Julianne Moore -always a fashion risk taker - wore the bright yellow trend of the night. But the high waisted skirt (that ends just below her breasts) and high neck top on this Dior dress seem almost matronly to me.
I love Edie Falco's dress from the back. I also love the navy and white effect. But I don't love the almost side cleavage from the front. It makes my eye go straight to her arm pit. And that seems wrong.
Not Loving It
Some women have sparkling public personalities and their dress just did not showcase it.
Julia Ormond created buzz this year with her flamboyant and sexy character on Mad Men this season. But this dress makes her disappear into the background.
Sorry to Julianna Margulies. I really did not love the pattern on her Giambattista Valli Couture dress. I guess I'm just not a floral kind of girl.
I want to love Nicole Kidman's dress. But I just can't.
Also, another fabulous/passionate actress is Glenn Close. Her dress seemed to be trying for passionate, but it was NOT fabulous. I could never imagine a dress wearing Glenn Close, but this one does.
Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt are almost always my favourite couple on the red carpet. And this picture really showcases their playful relationship.
I also really love Peter Dinklage and Erica Schmidt. Her lace dress is lovely and shows off her great legs.

Finally the person clearly having the most fun on the red carpet... Carrie Anne Inaba.
