It was the Emmy awards so there were sparkles, spanx, emmy tones, fights, flat jokes and musical numbers. All in the first 5 minutes.  There were also some lovely frocks.  The themes for the night seemed to be either a bright colour, a pale pale colour or black.

My favourite dressed really shouldn't count as she was hosting the red carpet. But Nancy O'Dell looked so fantastic in that smoking red hot dress, by Lorena Sarbu,  with turquoise accessories.

Best Dressed Category

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Category

According to Wikipedia not one of these Emmy nominated actresses is under 40.

Best Arm Candy

Who says the woman on the arm of the HOT Emmy Nominee actor can't show him up?  And that is a real challenge when that hot guy is Jon Hamm, but his long time partner Jennifer Westfeldt does it red carpet after red carpet after red carpet.  And this fabulous yellow dress is another winner.  She is just lovely in this dress. She would be my choice for second best dresses of the night.

The Hostess

Jane Lynch hosted her first Emmy Awards.  She looked nice in all her dresses, but several of them looked like dresses she had worn before. My favourite was her simple red carpet dress.  All her dresses were designed by David Meister.

Eye Candy Award

I have to admit I was a bit stunned by Matt LaBlanc for a moment, but then he opened his mouth and sounded just like Joey.  So my honorary eye candy award, over 40, goes to John Slattery.  And he looked even hotter when he put on those black glasses of his.

John Slattery

This being the more conservative Emmy Awards, there were not any real train wrecks, but there were still a few questionable outfits.

Amy Poehler in Peter Som

Amy is so funny and talented and lovely.  And while the colour was gorgeous, the fit didn't seem right for her and her hair to0 severe.

Elizabeth McGovern

The dress is lovely, but her make-up is too pale. She feels a bit ghost-like or perhaps she is a Twilight fan.

Jane Krakowski

Jane had a baby just a few months ago, so she is excused for perhaps being a bit tired to realize the fake tan was just a TAD overdone.

Julianna Margulies in Armani Prive couture gown

The white colour is lovely on Julianna, but I really don't love the top of this dress.  I wanted to love it.  But I just can't.

Julie Bowen in Oscar de la Renta

Another funny, talented woman that I adore. But this dress just makes her look dull and kind of lifeless.    This dress does not seem to reflect her energetic personality.  Plus it makes her looks really thin,  and not in a good way.

Kathy Griffin

This red is fantastic on Kathy. But the new plastic surgery leaves her looking well... plastic.

Margo Martindale

Margo is another colourful woman, who had a lot to celebrate with an Emmy win. But the shape of this dress does not show off Margo's great curves.  Although I give her props for the shoes.

Paula Abdul in Simeen and Martin Katz jewels

Paula was so funny in her little suit with Jane Lynch pretending to be an accountant. I wanted to put her in my suitcase and take her home.  But this dress, is classic, off kilter Paula. Literally, as there were no pictures with the dress on straight.

Randee Heller

I could not believe that this was Mad Men's Miss Blankenship. You know Don's old, half asleep, dies at her desk secretary.   I know! Unrecognizable.  She is such a gorgeous woman.  And I love that silver hair contrasted against that blue dress colour. But the shape of the dress is a bit Mother-of-the-bride and sorry to say so are the shoes.

Taraji P Henson in Blumarine

I had a hard time deciding if I liked this dress or not. Finally, because it was taking me so long I decided I didn't love it.  I think it is a bit shapeless. And the pattern draws my eyes to her stomach - which is a lovely stomach.  But I'm sure she rather the eye be drawn upward towards her face.

So which outfits were your favourite?  Anything you would wear on the red carpet if you ever had the chance?  Any other women over 40 that attended who should have been included on this list?
