Top Fashion Movies
It is my one week count down to the Sex in the City 2 première. So I thought I'd start off my SATC fashion week discussing fashion in movies.
A few weeks ago I taped a show called "Hollywood's 10 Best Fashion Movies" off the W Network. I found their list lacking. And in cases seemed like it was written by the Hollywood PR people. Here was their list:
10 - Legally Blond - lots of fun fashion in this film. But not sure it deserves to be on the top 10 list.
9 - Chicago - great 20s fashion. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for a musical.
8 - In her Shoes - just because it is about shoes, doesn't make it a top fashion movie
7 - Clueless - this made a huge impact on 90s fashion. So agree with them here.
6 - Confessions of a Shopaholic - Great fashion in this film. But didn't make my personal list.
5 - Atonement - One fantastic green dress does not MAKE a top fashion movie
4 - 27 Dresses - REALLY!!! When did bad bridesmaid dresses make a good fashion movie??
3 - Thomas Crown Affair - Gorgeous and glamorous movie. But not deserving of #3.
2 - Sex in the City - Agreed.
1 - Devil Wears Prada - Agree it deserves to be on the list. But not #1.
I did a google search to see who else has published "lists" on top fashion movies. MSN has a great list of great fashion moments. Includes great moments like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever and Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan. Also a great list on Fashion for Real Women. Although I found her list a bit too heavy on older movies. And finally College Fashion put out a list of movies ranging from Bringing Up Baby to Vicky Christina Barcelona.
So I put together a list of my own. Films that affected my fashion at one time or another in my life. 20 films got onto the short list. But here are my 10 favourites. They are loosely ranked. And I'm sure 10 minutes after I publish this list, I'll remember another film I just LOVED for its fashion. And I'm sure everyone reading will think of one I've forgotten. Please remind me of any you feel I missed in the comments.
Honorary mention goes to Zoolander. Which is the funniest movie about fashion. Even if the fashion itself is more than a little questionable.
10 - Mahogany - Beautiful 70s fashions worn and many designed by Diana Ross.
9 - Swing Time - I grew up dreaming about the dresses Ginger Rogers worn in all her films with Fred Astaire. This is my favourite.
8 - Grease - I think I was 11 when I first saw this movie. And I so wanted to be Sandy at the end in her super sexed up "bad" girl outfit.
7 - Flashdance - It wouldn't be right to leave out the film that had me wearing slouchy t-shirts and leg warmers for years.
6 - Clueless - I had a hard time picking between this and Heathers. But Clueless won out as such a strong influence on my 90s fashion.
5 - Pretty in Pink - This would be my 80s pick for fashion influence.
4 - Bringing Up Baby - Movies of the 1930 and in particular Katharine Hepburn had such elegance, yet freedom to move. She was such a no-nonsense woman. That I always figured if Katharine could wear it then it had to be practical - in some way.
3 - Devil Wears Prada - Meryl Streep in that wig says it all.
2 - Sex and the City - I was probably more influenced by this as a tv show. But you can't have a fashionable movie list and not include it.
1 - Breakfast at Tiffany's - You could include any Audrey Hepburn movie on this list. But Breakfast at Tiffany's is such a classic film. I think every generation of girls grows up loving the classic clothes in that film. It is the ultimate fashionable movie to me.
The other 10 films on my short list were: The Sting, Gigi, My Fair Lady, Love Story, Heathers, Annie Hall, Swing Shift, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Chicago and Saturday Night Fever.
Okay, now your turn. What did I miss?
