The Emmy’s over 40
So I will admit right up front I have not yet watched the Emmy telecast. I had tickets to the Blue Rodeo concert in Stanley Park tonight. And yes, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keeler take precedence. And I trust my PVR will save it for me to watch later in the week.
In the meantime I have reviewed the online photos of many of lovely ladies over 40 who were nominated, presented or just looked fantastic walking the red carpet. I have some favourites (I usually do). How about you? Please let me know in the comments which ones you love and which ones should fire their stylists.
Overall the Emmy fashion is never quite as luxurious or stunning as the Oscars. The stars of Television usually wear gorgeous dresses in early fall appropriate rich colours and texture. The over 40 set usually plays it a little safer than the young starlets. This year was no different, with lots of eggplant, navy blues and black on the red carpet. There was also a continuation of the pale pinks and taupes from the spring award show season. And a new trend for patterned dresses, some worked. Some didn't. Thankfully there was the odd shot of colour.
My favourite this year may be coloured by my love of Glee. But I thought Jane Lynch looked stunning. In the past she has downplayed her red carpet fashion. But last night she dressed like the the Emmy winner she is. At the bottom of my list in the "WTF" category was Rita Wilson.
- My favourite – Jane Lynch in LA Designer Ali Rahimi .
- Favourite #2 – Susan always looks spectacular and her Donna Karan dress does not disappoint. Neither does her “date” her daughter Eva.
- F#3 – Jane Krakowski in Escada
- F#4 Jennifer Westfeldt looks stunning beside her favourite Mad Man and husband Jon Hamm.
- F#5 – Julie Bowen in J Mendel.
- F#6 – Pale seemed to be a big trend last night. And Cheryl Hines looks fantastic in Zac Posen.
- F#7 – Carrie Preston from True Blood will likely be a controversial member of my favourite list. But I liked it.
- F#8 – Another controversial favourite. Lauren Graham wore a unique black and white Yigal Azrouel.
- F#9 – I love this colour and shape on Julia Ormond. Her make-up is a bit of a let down.
- Edie Falco in Bottega Veneta
- Julianna Margulies in L’Wren Scot
- Kyra Sedgwick in Monique Lhuillier. Never thought I’d see a dress that made her small frame seem thick.
- Maybe it is Glenn’s posture in this shot, but dress appears to be drooping.
- Mariska Hargitay in Vera Wang. Love the dress, but her hair makes the overall look fall flat.
- Padma Lakshmi in Carolina Herrera. She join the FF40 club Sept 1st.
- Kathy Griffin
- Paula Abdul has obviously been using a new stylist lately.
- Not everyone likes Tina Fey’s Oscar de la Renta gown. But I like that she doesn’t play it safe.
- Wanda Sykes
- Upon close inspection is seems Ann Margaret is wearing pants.
- Mary Hart at her last Emmy show. Mary the 80s are calling – they want their big hair back.
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Narcisco Rodriquez. Sheer panel reminds of a dress I owned in 1990 and the green earings feel very Angelina copy cat.
- Great to see Lily Tonlin on the red carpet. But her top half looks like it is ready to head to the office circa 1987.
- Not sure what Kate Linder from Y&R was doing at the Primetime Emmys. She looked great at the Daytime Emmys. But not tonight.
- Betty White is not surprisingly wearing something from her own closet. Not sure how many decades it has been there.
- The WTF award – Rita Wilson in Prada. None of this works for her. Fire your stylist Rita and read your own book on dressing after 40.
I am also going to point out that there are a number of women who looked fantastic on the red carpet, who are just a year or two shy of the "dreaded" Fashion Forward 40 club. These include Julie Benz (Dexter and Angel), Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee), Brooke Burke (Dancing with the Stars) and Amy Poehler (too many to mention).
